Not a good productI bought One for my small nephew but after previewing it, I know he will be very disappointed. It is very slow. Slower than an old 486 laptop that I have. If your child has ever used your computer, he is not going to want to use this One. The interface is odd and not very intuitive. You would be better off purchasing a low end Windows computer.
If you can read this, then the laptop is not meant for you.
The keyboard is cramped, the user interface is wacky, the web browser is crippled, the screen's effective resolution is a meager 800x600, the wireless network is slow, the CPU is sluggish, the RAM and disk space are paltry, but this laptop was never meant for *you*. If you're not certain that you want this laptop, then you probably don't.
Personally, I love it. The XO is rugged, light, small, and utterly silent. It would make a great embedded PC (but be aware that it has ONLY 802.11b, 3x USB, and One SD slot. No 10bT, serial, parallel, VGA, PS/2). The screen is bright and sharp (the 800x600 effective resolution is rendered using a 1200x900 actual resolution). I absolutely hated the keyboard when first I got it, but I'm touch-typing rather quickly on it now (I just ordered a mini USB keyboard, though). Yup, it's bright green and it looks like a Speak-and-Spell. Best $400 I spent in a long time.
Great concept but GUI is poorly executed
We bought our XO during the original G1G1 program. There are a lot of things I love about the XO: it is a very cool piece of hardware well targeted at a young audience, and has some fun software on it as well. It really needs a curriculum (and teacher) to get the most out of it. So don't buy it for a child thinking they will get a lot out of it on their own.
Where the XO really falls down is in the user interface. Rather than use a common style (Windows, MacOS and Linux desktops all have similar interfaces) the XO uses Sugar. Sugar is an absolute pain. If it was extremely easy and logical to use I wouldn't mind that the interface does not prepare a student for the future OS they might use. As it is students and adult mentors will feel crippled, AND they won't be prepared for future desktop interfaces.
So basically the XO is really for tech enthusiasts.
